Troubleshooting Illustrated at .com

As often as possible I take photos of damaged Z car parts that I typically encounter on older years and models, in the hopes of building up useful documentation for others to use in repairing and restoring their older Datsun cars. Below is a small, but slowly growing attempt to publish some of the hundreds of photos in my collection that I hope may prove to be of some aide to other Z enthusiasts and online discussion forums over time. When possible, photos will have text overlays or accompanying text added to clarify what is of importance in each photo. - Eric Neyerlin

Cracked Vent Tube Connector on 70-74.5 models. This little discussed plastic tube, hidden from quick visual inspection, can be one of the chief overlooked sources for gas fumes in early Z cars. For reasons unknown Nissan decided to insert this little plastic tube between upper plastic gas filler tube and rubber hose that allows gas fumes or gas overfill to be recovered back to the gas fume recover tank mounted behind the passenger side interior rear quarter panel. Quite often connector is totally hidden inside rubber hose ends. I have most often observed crack to be on on the backside of observable area and hence, not easily seen unless tank is unbolted from body and a closer inspection made.

Cracked Gas Filler Tubes pictured at left and poor sealing between clamped tube end and gas tank metal inlet are sources for many of the raw gas fumes encountered in older Z cars. Related to the above cracked vent tube connector is the issue of leaking gas filler tubes on 70-78 Z cars. If you observe small drops of gas (or worse) on ground below the passenger side of your gas tank after filling up your gas tank, good chance it is coming from either a poor seal between metal gas tank outlet and black plastic filler tube clamped on to it or from a crack in the filler tube itself. Troubleshooting this problem often requires that tube be detached from gas tank for complete inspection. Gas tank should be drained of most gas and supported before removal of tube or gas may spill out in quantity or tube end be damaged while attempting to wrestle tube off end of inlet. all surrounding parts should be cleaned off with a hose or air before removal to avoid debris getting into tank or eyes.

ZPARTS.COM salvages, inspects and tests as many as possible for resale. See Restoration Parts Special List ad section for prices and comparison between different model years of filler tubes.
